Jane Goodall

By: Colleen

Jane Goodall was born in London, England on April 3, 1934. Since she was little
Jane loved animals and thought they where fantastic and interesting. Over 30 years ago around 1960 when she was about 49 years old Jane Goodall was sent to Gombe, Tanzania by Dr. Louise Leaky. The reason he sent her there was because she had been working with him for a few years and saw her passion for animals. He knew she was the right person to send to Gombe.

Gombe
When she got to Gombe she studied chimpanzees, where they live (mostly in trees), who they live with (usually in families), what they eat (bugs, stuff in each others hair and meat), and what tools they use (sticks, saliva, twigs and crumpled leaves). All her discoveries add up to one thing chimpanzees are very similar to humans.

Roots & Shoots
After working with the chimps in Tanzania for a while, Jane Goodall started an organization called ROOTS & SHOOTS. Roots & Shoots is a program where students can help the community, animals and other people. This organization provides people with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It shows people of all ages, from 2nd grade through college, what a big difference they can make with just a few other people.

The Mission
The Roots & Shoots organization has a mission and that mission is: To foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment.

Still Here Today
Jane Goodall is still alive to this very day and travels to schools. She talks to kids about her experiences, what they can do to make the world a better place to live for all living things on the face of the earth.
